Pierre Sintès
Pierre Sintès is Associate Professor of Cultural and Social Geography at Aix-Marseille University, France. His research explores migration, diaspora and mobility in Greece and the Balkans, with a focus on how spatial and social transformations shape discourses of identification and belonging. His recent publications include Atlas géopolitique des Balkans (with Amaël Cattaruzza, 2016), Social Practices and Local Configurations in the Balkans (with de Rapper & Bardoshi, 2013) and Borders, Mobilities and Migrations: Perspectives from the Mediterranean, 19th-21st Century (2011). Within the LIMINALWATER consortium, he brings his expertise in ethnographic and spatial methodologies to the study of water-related counter-cultures and urban transformations. His contribution focuses on two case studies: Marseille and its industrial and working class peripheries, where maritime and working-class heritages intertwine, and Athens, where he will trace the disappeared waterways that once shaped the city’s social and cultural fabric. Across these sites, his work investigates how memories of water and mobility generate alternative narratives of resilience and belonging in the Mediterranean.
