On February 20, 2026, our team member Prof. Dr. Milka Car (University of Zagreb) took part in the Inaugural Workshop of the Transatlantic 19th-Century Literary Cultures Project (POTRAND19). The workshop brought together scholars to explore key questions related to literary cultures and transatlantic exchanges in the nineteenth century.
Prof. Dr. Car delivered a presentation entitled “Temporality, Narrative and Layered Identities,” in which she examined issues of national and cultural identity through the lens of modern temporality. Her talk engaged with theoretical perspectives developed by Eric Hobsbawm and Reinhart Koselleck, focusing on concepts such as Zeitraum, Zeitschichten, and Verzeitlichung. These ideas illuminate the emergence of a modern experience of time characterized by acceleration, transformation, and an ongoing sense of change. By situating literary narratives within these evolving temporal frameworks, Prof. Dr. Car highlighted how nineteenth-century texts negotiate complex, layered identities shaped by shifting historical consciousness.
